Why background music on a terrace is harder than it looks
An outdoor terrace does not behave like an indoor dining room. Sound has to compete with open air, traffic noise, wind and the absence of walls or ceilings that would otherwise help contain and distribute it. At the same time, the equipment itself has to survive rain, humidity and sun exposure without becoming a visible or maintenance-heavy addition to the space.
For Restaurant Pescarus, a restaurant in Bucharest with an outdoor terrace as one of its main assets, the goal was straightforward on paper and demanding in practice: even background music coverage across the whole terrace, using equipment that would not interfere with the venue's design.
Uniform coverage as the starting point of the design
A background music system for an outdoor HoReCa space is judged on consistency. If sound is noticeably louder near the loudspeakers and fades toward the edges of the terrace, the atmosphere stops feeling intentional and starts feeling like an afterthought.
For this project, the system was built around Ecler eMOTUS8OD loudspeakers, positioned across the terrace to provide balanced coverage rather than concentrated hotspots of sound. The eMOTUS8OD is an 8" two-way loudspeaker (8" woofer, 1" tweeter, 100 W RMS at 8 Ω) rated IP65, with an aluminium grille and UV-resistant treatment designed for continuous outdoor use rather than occasional exposure to the elements. That rating is what allows the loudspeakers to remain permanently installed on the terrace, in the open, without a protective housing or seasonal removal.
Beyond the technical rating, the enclosures were integrated into the terrace's architectural elements, which is what keeps the audio system from visually competing with the design of the space, the same principle behind most well-executed HoReCa installations, indoors or outdoors.
One unit for amplification, sources and control
Outdoor terraces used for everyday background music, as opposed to large event spaces, generally do not need a multi-zone matrix. What they need is a single, dependable point of amplification and source management.
That role is covered by the Ecler eHMA250, a self-powered mixer-amplifier that combines a 250 W amplifier with six inputs (2 mic, 2 mic/line stereo, 2 line stereo) in a single 1U rack unit. It supports both low impedance (4/8 Ω) and high impedance (50/70/100 V) loudspeaker lines, includes an auto stand-by mode to reduce power consumption when there is no audio signal, and provides the input flexibility needed to connect different background music sources without additional hardware.
In this installation, the eHMA250 powers the eMOTUS8OD loudspeakers directly while handling source connectivity, which keeps the technical footprint of the system to a single amplification point.
Built for daily use, not for a single event
The distinction matters: this is not a temporary PA setup for an event, but a permanent installation designed to run every service, every day, regardless of weather.
That requirement shaped every equipment choice in the project. Outdoor-rated enclosures instead of indoor loudspeakers adapted with weatherproof covers. A mixer-amplifier with auto stand-by instead of one that draws full power around the clock. Equipment sized for consistent background-level output instead of peak event volume.
The result is a system whose main achievement is that staff do not have to think about it: it starts, plays background music at a consistent level across the terrace, and does not require intervention beyond routine source management.
What the research says about background music and time spent on-site
A 2024 field experiment published in the peer-reviewed journal Behavioral Sciences measured how background music tempo affects real restaurant patrons. Guests exposed to slower tempo music stayed the longest, followed by a control group with no music, while guests exposed to faster tempo music left soonest. Bill amounts did not differ significantly between groups, although tips were higher in the faster tempo group (Malcman, Azar, Shavit & Rosenboim, 2024).
This is consistent with a broader body of hospitality research, going back to Ronald Milliman's original 1986 restaurant study, showing that music tempo measurably affects dwell time and spending behavior, not only subjective comfort. For an outdoor terrace, where the venue is competing with weather and open-air distractions for guests' attention, having a system capable of sustaining a deliberately chosen tempo and volume throughout service is not a cosmetic detail. It is one of the few atmospheric variables an operator can control directly.
A distributor-supported installation
The system was implemented using equipment supplied by ABC Tehno Solutions, exclusive distributor and importer of Ecler professional audio-video solutions in Romania. Why use IP65-rated loudspeakers instead of standard indoor speakers? IP65 protection allows the loudspeakers to remain permanently mounted outdoors, exposed to rain, humidity and sun, without a protective enclosure or seasonal removal. Standard indoor loudspeakers are not built to withstand that exposure over time.
Does a terrace of this kind need a multi-zone audio matrix? Not necessarily.
