Types of Audio Amplifiers

Audio Amplifiers come in several types depending on their role in the sound system and application, as listed below:  

Power Amplifiers  

Power Amplifiers are the most common types of amplifiers. These amplifiers drive loudspeakers at high or low impedance. The venue where you install or use the speakers changes the performance or results. 

Multi-channel amplifiers  

Multi-channel amplifiers provide several independent channels for installations that require multiple audio zones, allowing flexible routing and centralised control.  

Integrated amplifiers  

Integrated Amplifiers combine a preamp and a power amplifier into one unit. These are more commonly used in simpler AV setups and home audio.  

Mixer Amplifiers 

Mixer Amplifiers combine an audio mixer and a power amplifier in one unit. They are ideal for paging and background music in smaller spaces like retail stores, cafes, offices, and schools.  

DSP or digital matrix amplifiers  

Digital Matrix AMplifiers/DSPs are used in more advanced systems. They include built-in signal processing like EQ, limiters, compressors, and crossovers. They also have presets, and sometimes support network audio like DANTE/AES67. Therefore, enabling precise configuration and in some cases remote management via Cloud techonolgy.  

Dedicated subwoofer amplifiers 

Subwoofer amplifiers are tailored for low-frequency reproduction and deliver high current and efficiency. These are most commonly used in cinemas, clubs, and large-venue bass systems.  

In some cases, manufacturers build the amplifier into the speaker driver for specific uses. These are called active (powered) speakers.
